Dear Catholic Parents,

Jesus is teaching indoors, packed in by a crowd, when word comes that his mother and brothers are outside asking for him. His answer isn't what anyone expects: "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it." He isn't pushing his mother and disciples away - he's throwing the door open to everyone in the room, and to us. Proverbs adds the frame: "To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice." Not the gesture, the doing. Today's news has three quiet examples of people who heard something and simply acted on it.

1. Lourdes Fully Covers Rupnik Mosaics - "I Cried With Relief," a Survivor Said

Ahead of Pope Leo XIV's arrival at Lourdes on September 26, the sanctuary has completely covered the mosaics created by Father Marko Rupnik, a former Jesuit accused by more than 20 women of spiritual and sexual abuse. The coverings, in place since September 18, will remain permanently - a decision Bishop Jean-Marc Micas called necessary because visitors who are themselves survivors "must hold first place in Lourdes." Antonia Sobocki, a survivor advocate who accompanied one of Rupnik's alleged victims, Sister Samuelle, on an earlier visit, said of the news: "I cried with relief."

2. Pope Leo Will Pray the Rosary With Up to 1,000 Children on October 1

Children from schools and parishes across Rome will join Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican Gardens' Lourdes Grotto on October 1 to pray the rosary for peace, opening a global week of the "One Million Children Praying the Rosary" campaign led by Aid to the Church in Need. The initiative, inspired by the message given to the children at Fatima, invites any parish, school, or family anywhere in the world to join during the week leading to October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Faith Lens for the Home: A thousand children, in a garden, doing one simple thing together. Ask your family: "Could we join this - even just one rosary, one evening this week, as our own small part of that same prayer?" Sometimes hearing the word and acting on it looks exactly this small.

3. Pope Leo to Nuns Facing a Vocations Decline: "Vocations Are Not Born From Campaigns"

Meeting with the Federation of Capuchin Poor Clare Nuns of Italy, Pope Leo XIV told the sisters not to let shrinking numbers discourage them. "The numerical decline of communities... should neither trouble you nor deprive you of hope," he said, explaining that real vocations come not from recruitment strategies but "from prayer, familiarity with the Gospel, silence, acceptance of oneself with one's imperfections, and a sense of belonging."

Faith Lens for the Home: The pope told cloistered nuns the same thing Jesus told the crowd: belonging isn't produced by effort or strategy - it grows from actually living the thing, quietly, faithfully. Ask your family: "What's something we've been trying to force that might actually just need more quiet faithfulness instead?"

St. Maurice and Companions - September 22

Tradition holds that Maurice led the Theban Legion, an entire Roman regiment of Christian soldiers stationed in Egypt, who were ordered in the third century to perform pagan sacrifices before battle. They refused - not through rebellion, but through simple, unwavering hearing and doing of what they knew to be true. According to the account, the entire legion, along with Maurice, was martyred rather than comply. He is patron of soldiers, armies, and those who must stand firm under command from powers who ask them to act against conscience.

Ask at dinner: "An entire regiment stood together and refused together. What does it look like for our own family to stand together on something we believe, even under pressure?"

✋ One Simple Action

Pray one decade of the rosary tonight as a family - in spiritual union with the children who will gather at the Vatican on October 1. Pray for the survivors Lourdes chose to protect. And ask God to show your family one small, quiet thing you could simply start doing, rather than talking about.
